wish upon a teen

stila was honored to be apart of wish upon a teen's "teen spa day" on monday at sonya dakar in beverly hills. we spent the day with young girls battling life threatening diseases.  their strength and spirits were an inspiration to us all.  check out some photos of the day below.  the girls are so beautiful - inside and out!










we had the most amazing time with these girls!  they made our day-we can only hope that we made theirs :)

stila spends the day with living beauties

last sunday stila spent the day with the foundation for living beauty, an organization that supports cancer survivors.  our very own living beauty, sarah lucero, hosted this event.  during the day, each living beauty was pampered by our stila pro artists.  they also received a blowout from the prive hair team.  then special portraits were taken.  we loved celebrating each and every living beauty and their amazing beauty inside and out.  here are some fun photos of the living beauties and our pro artists.

tomorrow breast cancer awareness month begins.  in honor of all the women living with cancer and those who have survived, stila created this amazing palette.  pick up your very own “positive and pretty” palette.  a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this palette will go to breast cancer research and the betterment of women living with cancer.

"PRO"file piece - tracy sharpe

introducing sales and artistry executive, tracy sharpe!  she is incredible - a california native, enthusiast, optimist, hard-working, spirited individual who adds so much to the stila team.  tracy has over 20 years of experience in the industry.  when she is not working, tracy spends much of her time volunteering with different charities.  read the q&a below to learn more about her charity work and the effect that it has had.

how long have you been participating in charity work and what led you to start?
i’ve been doing charity work since i was little.  my parents always taught me to help those who can’t help themselves.  i lost a 7 year old nephew to leukemia and that too motivated me to become more involved. 

what charities are you involved with?
CB2U, humain society, leukemia, women of the year for leukemia by niello foundation, children's receiving home of sacramento, susan g. komen., ovarian cancer awareness, burn victims society awareness, spca, aspca, autism, and a few others.

does charity work help you stay positive?
yes.  i learned from my parents that “life is what you make it”.  this is the way i have always tried to live and i am fortunate to be involved with such great organizations.

is there anything that stands out from your charity work – a most memorable moment?
yes indeed.  my son could never talk about the fact that his cousin died from leukemia.  in 2007, i collected $88,000 for a charity contest.  when i was announced the winner of the challenge, my son decided to film a national video depicting his feelings about loosing a loved one to this ugly disease.  this video was a blessing to me and to all who saw it.

through your service, you build others confidence.  is it the same when you are working as a makeup artist?
definitely.  there are those individuals who have a low self esteem and need to build on that.  i believe makeup can help.  often, as i work with these people, i hope that the relationship i build when applying makeup will actually make an even bigger difference.

so one last question.  what stila products bring you the most happiness?
WOW.  so many.  the brushes, of course.  i love the lip glazes.  they are amazing.  i also think the eye shadows are the best quality i have ever seen.  and my new favorite is the kitten all over shimmer.  i think it lights up everyone’s face!

at stila we like to stay on top of the trends, or even one step ahead of them.  just look at our environmental initiatives - a concern that has been a priority to stila since our beginnings in the 90s.  today eating the right food is just as important as being eco-friendly.  and one of the most trendy and important foods to consume is superfoods.  foods like pomegranates and acai berries (both superfoods) offer substantial health benefits and are receiving raves not only in the health food aisle, but also in other segments.

it looks like stila wasn’t too far off when we began creating our superfood lip and cheek stains – a revolutionary product at the time.  these “crushes” offer users long wearing capabilities in addition to vitamins and antioxidants for their skin.  in a nutshell – it not only looks good, but it’s also good for you allowing you to feed your face one application at a time. 

even better, business week caught wind of this savvy product of ours last week.  they claim it to be part of what they refer to as the superfood chain.  from the basic pomegranate stems, POM juice, pomegranate yogurt, and even stila's pomegranate crush!  if you haven’t tried it yet, we recommend it.  this stain is an ideal shade for the winter season.

meet viviana martin, stila’s pro artist relations manager and a breast cancer survivor.  viv was diagnosed with breast cancer at a very young age and elected to be part of a special study at ucla.  she was fortunate to have dr. glaspy, the chief of oncology, as her doctor. today viv is 11 years cancer free.  since october is breast cancer awareness month, we interviewed viv about her experience.  here is what she had to say.

you dealt with the reality of breast cancer at a young age.  what did you learn from this experience?
first, get examined no matter what your adult age is.  you can take the lead in getting other examinations because the mammogram is not always 100% accurate – especially if your gut tells you something isn’t right.  second, never take life for granted.  i am grateful for each day of my life.

what advice do you have for women that are currently suffering from breast cancer?
don’t lose hope.  medical technology is always advancing.  having endured the treatments myself, I know how difficult chemo and radiation are.  however, you can have a normal life in the end. 

how did you cope with the emotional and physical side effects of cancer?
i got through cancer by staying positive, with humor, and mostly with a lot of faith.  my husband was my cheerleader, and my friends and family always checked in on me.  it was physically difficult, but I kept telling myself it would be ok in the end.

when you are sick, certain things can provide you a “pick me up”?  is makeup one of these things?
the one thing that made me feel normal when i lost my hair was playing with wigs and makeup.  if i wanted to give myself a treat, i could count on kitten eye shadow, convertible color, and all of the lip glazes because they would add a glow that i so lacked.
