get creative!

Feb 10, 2012

during fashion week the term "creative" takes on an entire new meaning.  in the hustle and bustle backstage, we have done just about anything to create the PERFECT look!  and one thing we do often is mix products.  mixing can create the ideal look or save time - depending on what we need at the moment.  while you might not be backstage with us, it's easy to add some creativity to your makeup.  and we thought the best place to begin was with our new beauty balm.  here are some tips for making this product work in nearly all scenarios...

-mix beauty balm with foundation or tinted moisturizer.  this is great if you are in a hurry or looking for a less steps with a similar result.

-use beauty balm as a finishing touch to fine tune your skin.  sometimes applying it last - where needed - can create that flawless finish you are looking for.

-mix beauty balm with one step correct if you want a little glow to the skin, but still want the HD effects.

-layer beauty balm.  this can build coverage and create airbrushed looking skin.  start small and build the product.

***the idea is to think outside of the box and remember that makeup is as individual as your signature...

guest blog - heather from hello beautiful

Jul 27, 2011

We are excited to share an amazing review of our smudgestick eyeliners!  Like all of us at stila, heather from hello beautiful is in love with this fantastic product.  Read why below and check out the q&a to learn more about her.

i love my stila smudgestick!

love stila's smudgepots but hate the fuss? the stila smudgestick is a smudgepot in an easy to apply eyeliner applicator.  true to stila form, this liner is extremely pigmented, and the staying power is second to none.  the best part?  once you've applied this liner, it literally doesn't budge!  this liner doesn't flake, transfer, or fade.  the color range is beautiful;  my personal favorite is stingray;  a very rich matte black.  atila also has colors ranging from a beautiful slate blue (blue ribbon), to a must-have bronze sheen shade (lionfish).  and this liner will last you a very long time.  a little goes a loooong way!  here is why I put stila above all other traditional pen/pencil eyeliners:

pigmentation:  atila is best known for their superior color pigmentation - the smudgestick is no exception
ease of use:  this retractable eyeliner glides on smoothly and blends easily
waterproof:  yes, this is actually a waterproof liner
color range:  stila's colors range from rich matte to eye-catching shimmer shades
smudge-ability:  this product can be smudged; however, it does set quickly

this pencil is not meant for the waterline, though.  you are better off using a stila kajal eyeliner or the traditional smudgepot for the waterline.

stila is a fantastic company with consistently superior and innovative products;  the smudgestick is no exception and i highly recommend it!

"PRO"file piece - shelby hardie

Jul 19, 2011

we are thrilled to introduce to you our multi-talented sales & artistry executive and pro artist shelby hardie. shelby oversees WA, OR, ID, UT, and quebec for stila. she grew up on whidbey island, spending the majority of her time outside. however, in 8th grade she learned french, a skill that still comes in handy for her today. in fact, whenever she travels to quebec, shelby is able to educate and train on makeup in french, the primary language of the area. how amazing, right? read more about shelby and her love of the french language below in this fantastic q&a.

many consider language one of the arts – do you agree?
having a proclivity to learning language with ease is an art of love. we all have special talents - some are excellent at math, others cook extraordinary things with few ingredients, some can make music, and some can paint a canvas that will transport you. i feel if you have a true passion for a language you can possess it and let your love for that particular language guide you in fearlessly conversing with native speakers. that is part of the trick, not being afraid to actually use your new found language skills, knowing that you will indeed make mistakes, but that’s how we learn.

what are the benefits of speaking to someone in their native tongue?
first and foremost, it opens your world up and you meet people that you may not have conversed with otherwise. i speak a couple of other languages as well and have had so much fun meeting people from other cultures and also learning from them. i enjoy the bemused yet relieved look on someone's face when i let them know that i speak their language.

is it difficult to describe makeup in the french language?
no. i will admit though, i had to learn some new vocabulary before my first trainings in quebec. i had to learn words like: high definition, shimmery, opalescent and waterproof. one of the things that i enjoy about learning other languages is that their are words that we don’t have in english. in french there is a really cool way to say “its bright and beautiful”; the translation in french is “ca flash!” it's one of my favorite expressions!

do people in the same region tend to like the same products or does it vary?
i find that women are very similar everywhere. in quebec, they love bright colors and are always interested in new technique. they're fascinated and drill me on every detail of new york fashion week. i do find however, that women in montreal are extremely discerning. you HAVE to explain in detail why a product is a must have and absolutely apply it on the client.

what is one product that everyone loves no matter where you go?
actually, there are three products that everyone loves no matter where i go: stay all day waterproof eyeliner in carbon black, one step correct, as well as our stains. all are favorites all over the world!

convertible color – a “best beauty buy”

Apr 21, 2011

did you know stila’s convertible color recently received an in style “best beauty buys” award?  according to their beauty editors, it’s the best cream blush around!  we are so honored that convertible color is a “best beauty buy.”  we too love it and have loved it for several years!!!

here's why some of our artists love convertible color:

“it’s my fav!  convertible color is a great way to “spruce” up your look in seconds.  just use your fingertips to add radiance to your cheeks and enhance your lip color.”  -viviana martin

“it’s fantastic.  it looks like it's part of the complexion and not just sitting on your skin like a powder would.  plus it makes you look younger and more healthy.” –jason araujo

“convertible color is my favorite product.  i have worn it everyday for 10 years!!!  i love the smooth texture and consistent payoff.  i like that you can wear it alone or over your favorite foundation for a pop of color.  when wearing convertible color on both lips and cheeks, it encourages “balanced beauty” and harmony by keeping the lips and cheeks in the same color family.  this is a key element in creating modern makeup.” –sarah lucero

pro artist tip of the week - using a lip and cheek stain

Apr 4, 2011

the crush category at stila, better known as lip and cheek stains, is a popular product at stila.  what better than beautiful lip and cheek colors that stay?!  add to this an amazing shade range - bright red to brown and lots in between :).  plus, we're pretty sure that anyone on the go can use these "crushes" with some tinted moisturizer, mascara, and look good all day.  need help applying?  read these tips.

-prep your lips properly before application.  remove any flakey skin and make sure your lips are free from oil and other residue.

-for the best looking pout, apply the product all over the lips and then press them together to ensure the product adheres.  then add another layer-kind of like a top coat.  this will set your color and ensure it looks smooth and balanced on the lips.

-if you just want a little color, apply the product to your lips with your fingers.

-when using the product on your cheeks, try removing the gel from the container and then blending onto your face with your fingers.

-the brighter colors (acai and raspberry) can be toned down for proper cheek application.  mix them with illuminating tinted moisturizer and then apply to avoid looking overdone.

"PRO"file piece - christine rozalowsky

Mar 23, 2011

we are thrilled to introduce you to our shining stila star, christine.  she is an artist working in the canada region.  christine’s passion is evident in her work.  she loves educating people about her favorite products, and she is always open to sharing experiences she’s learned doing makeup backstage at fashion week.  in fact, her enthusiasm for fashion is what makes her unique as a makeup artist – she easily combines fashion and makeup trends and is always in the know.  to learn more, read her q & a below.

what have you learned working backstage at new york fashion week?
i was beyond nervous during my first fashion week.  however, the most important thing i learned was team work!  the stila team works together and learns from each other.  in addition, i was also able to see clothes that women only dream about.  the makeup looks are created to go with these clothes.  i loved the lela rose spring 2011 look.  i realized that when you mix lover and outrageous long wear lip colors, it looks amazing on everyone – no matter what skintone.

do you have a favorite makeup trend right now?
my favorite makeup trend is clean, edgeless skin.  you always want a person to tell you how amazing your skin looks.  you do not want them to ask what foundation you are using.  plus, this look never detracts from the clothing :)

when the winter ends, we tend to get rid of our layers.  does this concept apply with our makeup?
yes.  especially in canada.  i notice that the skin takes on a different life in the winter and we tend to wear more makeup.  when it warms up, we use less complexion products on our skin.  similarly, we use tinted moisturizer a lot backstage at fashion week.  instead of packing on layers of complexion products, the eyes or lips become the focal point of the show.

do temperature changes affect your makeup routines?
canada is very extreme in temperature.  you need two sets of clothing and two sets of makeup.  during the summer months, i love relying on the tinted moisturizer.  it has spf and is oil free.  plus it covers.  i also like to use lip products that won’t slide off.  my favorite is the caprice long wear liquid lip color that we used backstage at betsey johnson for spring 2011.

how can the everyday woman stay on trend?
don’t be afraid of runway.  at the end of the day, designers are just making clothes, and hair stylists and makeup artists are just doing their jobs.  instead try a trend like the rocker look from rebecca minkoff's fall 2011 show.  it is easy to pull off and wearable.

what is the one product you can’t live without for spring and summer?
prime pot in taffy.  i love this product because it is multi-functional.  we have used it at so many shows backstage, and you can use it everyday on your eyelids, lips, and as a spot treatment.

top stila products at trade shows across the country

Mar 15, 2011

we've been working a lot of trade shows over the last few weeks, which has given us the opportunity to meet lots of new faces! all of the attendees around the country definitely have their favorite stila products, and we enjoyed the individuality that each new customer brought. however, we also realized that no matter who you are, where you live, or what you do, there are a few must have stila products for everyone. these products were always high in demand, and they seemed to sell out fast no matter where we went!

one step correct. this product looks good and feels good. it's a win-win every time.

smudge pots. liner and shadow in one!

liquid liner. if you haven't tried this, you are missing out. we love it in all shades - especially the carbon black. and believe us - it stays... all day.

convertible color. cream blush that looks natural and is fun and easy to apply. did we mention you can use it on your lips too?

pro artist tip of the week - make the most of the long wear liquid lip colors

Mar 14, 2011

stila's long wear liquid lip colors are extremely popular. and if you haven't tried them, you are definitely missing out. there's nothing better than a pigmented matte lipstick that stays.  no bleeding, touching up, or fuss when it comes to this product. just paint it on and go.  to make the most of this innovative lip product, read these tips below.

stila's head artist, sarah lucero, suggests starting the application in the center of your lips where you want the most pigment.  blend the product from there.

this product offers flexibility in terms of pigment.  add a little liquid and blend with your finger for a less pigmented look.  or layer for maximum pigment and coverage.  it's truly up to you!  have fun with it!

to perfect the lip look, use the long wear liquid lip colors with the long wear lip liners.  both with allow you to achieve that perfect pout that turns heads every time.

tip from christine

Mar 11, 2011

we love tips!  and christine, one of our artists in canada, just gave us a great one that we thought we share with all of you.  christine has been educating a lot of people in her region about our new spring line.  when she was working with the sephora at market mall, she discovered this great trick using the new prime pots.

use both shades of the prime pot for a long wearing, contoured eye look, that will definitely make your eyes pop.  christine suggests using taffy as your base all over the eye.  then, apply caramel to the crease to create a contour.  the look creates great depth on the eyes.  and it is perfect for anyone who wants their makeup to stay in place all day!

thanks for the tip christine.  such a beautiful, simple eye look that creates amazing results!

pro artist tip of the week – products to rely on any day

Mar 7, 2011

one of the greatest things about makeup is the idea/fact that just one product can make a difference.  sure, you combine an assortment of products and you have an award-winning look that turns heads on the red carpet.  but on those days, when time is of the essence, and you simply need to make the most of your inherent beauty, be sure to rely on a few key products.  in a pinch, they will always make you look great.  and they aren’t hard to use!

tinted moisturizer.  tinted moisturizer will revitalize your skin instantly.  it’s an all in one formula – moisturizer, foundation, sunscreen – that is easy to use and looks great every time.  we love that our new and improved version is oil free.

cream blush.  a great cream blush like convertible color is perfect for a few reasons.  first, it’s easy to apply.  fingers are the suggested method!  second, cream blushes instantly add life to the skin.  it’s like youth in a compact!

waterproof eyeliner.  your eyes take the most abuse during the day, and if you are pressed for time you probably don’t want to worry about reapplying.  waterproof is the way to go.  stila’s smudge stick is very easy to apply, but if you prefer a more dramatic line, try the liquid eyeliner.

mascara.  don’t waste time coating your eyelashes.  instead, pick a good mascara that does the work for you.  this is one of the benefits of glamoureyes mascara.  the brush makes it easy to get every last lash coated.

lip glaze.  we can come up with a lot of reasons why you need lip glaze.  but, at the end of the day, this product will hydrate your lips and look pretty at the same time.  what more could you want out of a gloss?

do you wear makeup on your days off?

Feb 22, 2011

we are just settling in from a nice three day weekend and we have a question on our minds... do you wear makeup on your days off?  of course we love makeup at stila.  but we also like breaks.  and a little no makeup non sense can be nice.  but here's a little secret.  when we say no makeup, we probably mean illuminating tinted moisturizer and some lip glaze - just for moisture of course!

what about you?  is it no makeup completely, full makeup, or a no makeup look?
