pro artist tip of the week – contouring, highlighting, shading, etc.

Apr 18, 2011

pro makeup artists definitely have several tricks up their sleeves - one of the most common being the art of contouring.  a makeup artist will contour to properly shape the face.  this means they will shade certain areas and highlight others.  here’s a basic rundown of why contouring is used and how you can implement it on your own to make your features stand out.

-contouring techniques can be used on all areas of the face including cheeks, forehead, nose, jaw line, and eyes.

-when you contour, you use shading and highlighting techniques to thin out areas of the face and brighten/enlarge others.

-the cheeks are commonly contoured to make the face look thinner.  you can achieve this with stila’s bronzer and kitten all over shimmer.  apply the bronzer starting at the apples of your cheeks.  blend up and back to create a subtle shading on the skin.  then dust kitten all over shimmer on your cheekbones.  these two steps will instantly draw the light to your cheekbones and thin your face.

-if you want your eyes to look bigger, the same concept applies.   apply a light shimmer color on the lid like kitten eye shadow to brighten.  then dust a matte eye shadow color in your crease lightly (try eden or puppy) to shade and contour.  your eyes will look bigger in seconds!

-lastly, keep in mind when makeup artists contour, they are determining what they want to enhance and what they need to correct.  highlight what you want to enhance and shade what you want to correct.  just don’t go overboard!  it should look subtle and natural.

pro artist tip or the week - how to make your eyes look bigger

Feb 7, 2011

sarah receives lots of emails from stila fans like you, and one of the top asked questions is, "how can I make my eyes look bigger?" your eyes are a key feature on your face - arguably the most important. therefore, the bigger and better they look, the more beautiful you will look each day. fortunately, you don't need to be a pro to enhance your eyes. instead just follow these simples guidelines.

use a shimmery shadow in your lid to pop and open up your eyes. the smaller the eye shape, the lighter the color. and for the most natural look, select the shade closest to your skin tone.

apply a matte shadow slightly above the crease to contour. when you apply it above the crease, it visually lifts the eye. try keeping your eye open when you do this and avoid a banana looking stripe. the contour should be subtle.

coat extra mascara in the right areas. for many people adding more coats to the center eyelashes will achieve that doe eyed look, helping to make the eyes look bigger and less slanted. try it!

roses have always been a girl’s best friend and this rose makeup look from the color wheel is soon to be your best friend in terms of makeup.  why?  it’s simple, subtle, and will still enhance your features.  what more could a girl ask for?  lindsey forrest, stila’s pro artist who created this look suggests focusing on the crease color to maximize the outcome of the look.  “keep your eyes open when you are applying the crease color,” lindsey suggests. “this allows you to see want needs to be enhanced!”  since the eye look is more subtle, going bolder on the lips and cheeks is a great combo.  try stila’s raspberry crush.

the color wheel look in nude

Nov 25, 2010

the nude makeup look is very popular right now.  it’s not about wearing no makeup.  instead, it’s about wearing the right makeup to enhance your features.  because of this, the look is usually very neutral and understated – perhaps it’s that vibe that allows people to think you aren’t trying to hard when in fact you just made some good makeup decisions.  dominick briguglio did this “nude look” from stila’s holiday color wheel lookbook.  “the shadow plays a key element in the look,” dom explains, “because it brightens her eyes and emphasizes their shape.”  if you focus on enhancing your features in a natural way – like dom suggests with the eye shadow – this look is simple.  in addition, dom also recommends a bronzer to help properly shape and contour your face.
