pro artist tip of the week – skin savers

May 16, 2011

as makeup artists we come across all types of skin.  sure it would be ideal to work on a perfectly prepped canvas every time, however that is not usually the case!  everyone has different skin and different issues/concerns.  although taking care of your skin is a process and something you do over time, there are definitely certain products you can use to save your skin and make it look better.  here are some suggestions.

  • does your makeup wear throughout the day?  if not, your skin could be dehydrated.  in many cases the skin eats the makeup because it lacks moisture.  if this is you, drink more water and try using a product like our hydrating primer.  it balances the skin and provides the extra moisturize your skin needs.
  • for those with oily skin, try skipping moisturizer during the daytime.  instead use a primer that will control oil like stila’s one step correct.  this product will not only smooth your skin, but it will also prevent the makeup from sliding off your face.
  • are you suffering from a bad breakout?  less is more.  sounds like an oxymoron – we know.  no we are not suggesting you walk around bare skinned.  instead use a lightweight foundation, a little bit of concealer on the blemish, and a powder to smooth the skin like stila’s illuminating powder foundation!

pro artist tip of the week - the perfect red lip

May 9, 2011

red lips are a hot trend right now. after all, who can resist a red hot lip. plus, it seems like an easy way to spice up your look. however, it's not always that simple. the application process alone can be a struggle. and figuring out what to pair with your red lip is another issue. don't fret. here are some helpful hints to help anyone achieve the perfect red lip.

-what shade? the orange-red looks great on fair and deep skin tones. a blue-red is perfect for medium to dark skin tones. and a true red like lover long wear lip color will work on anyone!

-for a defined red lip, begin with a lip liner. if you prefer that pouty lip look, opt out of lip liner

-need your lipstick to stay? dust stila's hydrating finishing powder on the lips in between lipstick layers!

-clean up mistakes with perfecting concealer. apply it to the outside of the lips with the #11 brush.

-smile when you apply your lipstick. this makes it easier to coat every part of the lips and helps you achieve a precise line.

-tired of your red lipstick bleeding? try our long wear liquid lip color in fiery. this lip color wears all day and will not move or bleed! no more worrying about your teeth or your chin!

-lastly, keep the lips the focus of your look when wearing red. we recommend adding some bronzer and lots of mascara!

pro artist tip of the week – contouring, highlighting, shading, etc.

Apr 18, 2011

pro makeup artists definitely have several tricks up their sleeves - one of the most common being the art of contouring.  a makeup artist will contour to properly shape the face.  this means they will shade certain areas and highlight others.  here’s a basic rundown of why contouring is used and how you can implement it on your own to make your features stand out.

-contouring techniques can be used on all areas of the face including cheeks, forehead, nose, jaw line, and eyes.

-when you contour, you use shading and highlighting techniques to thin out areas of the face and brighten/enlarge others.

-the cheeks are commonly contoured to make the face look thinner.  you can achieve this with stila’s bronzer and kitten all over shimmer.  apply the bronzer starting at the apples of your cheeks.  blend up and back to create a subtle shading on the skin.  then dust kitten all over shimmer on your cheekbones.  these two steps will instantly draw the light to your cheekbones and thin your face.

-if you want your eyes to look bigger, the same concept applies.   apply a light shimmer color on the lid like kitten eye shadow to brighten.  then dust a matte eye shadow color in your crease lightly (try eden or puppy) to shade and contour.  your eyes will look bigger in seconds!

-lastly, keep in mind when makeup artists contour, they are determining what they want to enhance and what they need to correct.  highlight what you want to enhance and shade what you want to correct.  just don’t go overboard!  it should look subtle and natural.

pro artist tip of the week - pick a feature and go with it

Mar 28, 2011

as makeup artists, we understand that doing your own makeup can be overwhelming.  we even struggle with it at times.  many of us feel that its hard to see our own faces the way we see someone else's.  perhaps you agree - you stare at the beauty of others around you failing to notice the beauty that is your own.  in an effort to end this negativity, we have a suggestion.  pick a feature and go with it.

pick the feature about yourself you like the most, and enhance that when you are doing your makeup.  it could be your lips, your eyes, your cheekbones, your brows.  whatever it is - make the most of it.

not sure what your best feature is?  ask a friend.  they will tell you.  they look at you and are the best judge.

focusing on a feature is a good makeup technique as well.  it ensures that your face is not overwhelmed with lots of makeup.  instead, balance is achieved.

lastly, remember, there is beauty in everyone.  one of the things we love most about beauty is that it has no set rules.  there is not one "kind" of beautiful.  so, everyday let your true beauty shine through.

stila says goodbye to elizabeth taylor

Mar 24, 2011

the passing of elizabeth taylor yesterday was sad for all of us at stila.  she was a beauty legend who will definitely be missed.  makeup trends definitely come and go; however, elizabeth taylor's look was classic no matter what day or year.  she had a timeless beauty and her style was contagious.

for those days when you are in an elizabeth taylor kind of mood, we recommend her signature smoky eyes and bold red lip.  it's feminine and confident at the same time.  try stingray smudge stick eyeliner and espresso eye shadow on your eyes.  keep your cheeks neutral - maybe adding just a hint of bronzer.  then polish off your lips with lover long wear lip color!  you will look like a bombshell every time.  plus, you will be honoring the memory of elizabeth and her iconic style.

may her inspiration live on for many years to come.

xoxo, stila

tip from christine

Mar 11, 2011

we love tips!  and christine, one of our artists in canada, just gave us a great one that we thought we share with all of you.  christine has been educating a lot of people in her region about our new spring line.  when she was working with the sephora at market mall, she discovered this great trick using the new prime pots.

use both shades of the prime pot for a long wearing, contoured eye look, that will definitely make your eyes pop.  christine suggests using taffy as your base all over the eye.  then, apply caramel to the crease to create a contour.  the look creates great depth on the eyes.  and it is perfect for anyone who wants their makeup to stay in place all day!

thanks for the tip christine.  such a beautiful, simple eye look that creates amazing results!

do you wear makeup on your days off?

Feb 22, 2011

we are just settling in from a nice three day weekend and we have a question on our minds... do you wear makeup on your days off?  of course we love makeup at stila.  but we also like breaks.  and a little no makeup non sense can be nice.  but here's a little secret.  when we say no makeup, we probably mean illuminating tinted moisturizer and some lip glaze - just for moisture of course!

what about you?  is it no makeup completely, full makeup, or a no makeup look?

pro artist tip or the week - how to make your eyes look bigger

Feb 7, 2011

sarah receives lots of emails from stila fans like you, and one of the top asked questions is, "how can I make my eyes look bigger?" your eyes are a key feature on your face - arguably the most important. therefore, the bigger and better they look, the more beautiful you will look each day. fortunately, you don't need to be a pro to enhance your eyes. instead just follow these simples guidelines.

use a shimmery shadow in your lid to pop and open up your eyes. the smaller the eye shape, the lighter the color. and for the most natural look, select the shade closest to your skin tone.

apply a matte shadow slightly above the crease to contour. when you apply it above the crease, it visually lifts the eye. try keeping your eye open when you do this and avoid a banana looking stripe. the contour should be subtle.

coat extra mascara in the right areas. for many people adding more coats to the center eyelashes will achieve that doe eyed look, helping to make the eyes look bigger and less slanted. try it!

“PRO”file piece – sarah lucero

Jan 11, 2011

it’s time to introduce you to our head artist, sarah lucero.  she’s pretty amazing – a celebrity makeup artist, stila’s spokesperson, our director of global education, a fashionista, trend setter, brooke shields look-a-like, friend, and more.  since red carpet season has arrived, we wanted to ask sarah a few questions about red carpet beauty.  here’s what she had to say...

tell us about red carpet makeup – why is it so special and is there anything different about it than ordinary makeup?
when I am helping someone get red carpet ready, i want them to look flawless.  cameras are everywhere on the red carpet and it’s important to be prepared.  so yes more makeup may be worn on the red carpet.  however, to me red carpet makeup is about making the most of someone’s features.  that is something anyone can accomplish any day – whether they have 5 minutes or 45 minutes.

how can someone who isn’t a professional makeup artist like you recreate a red carpet look?
stila’s new E! palettes are my favorite.  each option is a classic trend that always looks great on or off the red carpet.  plus every palette instructs the user where to apply each shade making it fail proof.  it’s the perfect starting point for red carpet makeup.  and its affordable.

do you have any tips for using these palettes?
yes.  i love applying the shadows wet with the #15 brush.  this technique turns the shadow into a paste-like texture and pops anyone’s eyes in an instant.  also, a good foundation is key to any red carpet look.  remember, if your skin looks good, anything you put on top of it will look that much better.

what is your favorite red carpet trend right now?
i love a colored cat eye.  my favorite is deep blue.  you can easily recreate this using the darker shades from the stunning starlet palette and the breathtaking beauty palette.  or try the new liquid liner in indigo.  it’s my amazing.

makeup faux-pas are scrutinized on the red carpet.  how can we avoid these mistakes on an everyday basis?
having walked the red carpet myself, i understand the pressure one feels to look good.  my advice is don’t try too hard, but have fun.  and pick the right shade of foundation!

the color wheel look in violet

Nov 19, 2010

one of our favorite looks from the color wheel lookbook is the violet look.  sarah lucero created this very modern look.  it's a great take on the popular cat eye trend.  instead of the typical liquid liner, strong upper lash line emphasis, this look is a heavy lower cat eye that was created with eye shadow.  "it's a great option for lifting and extending the eye shape.  and it's very sultry," sarah explains.  the best way to recreate the look is to use the small end of the #15 brush wet.  when you line your lower lashline, extend the line up and out.  and since this look is so bold, keep the lips nuetral.  try gerbera convertible color and topaz kajal eye liner for a great nuetral lip.

if you are in need of some violet inspiration when using your palette, check out our inspiration here!  violet has never looked so good!

pro artist tip of the week - avoid looking older with your makeup

Nov 15, 2010

as women, we definitely have to face the facts and understand that we are all aging.  sure we can take advantage of procedures – topical and surgical – to make us look younger.  why do you think botox is a booming business today?  at stila we are like switzerland when it comes to botox - we aren't advocating or opposing the practice.  however, we are here to say as experts in the industry that certain makeup techniques are unfortunately aging.  avoid them.  now.  we want everyone to look as young as possible.  and makeup is a great resource for this.  here are some suggestions to ensure that you’re makeup is not aging you.

choose the right foundation.  the other day we worked with this woman who was wearing the wrong foundation.  it looked ashy on her skin and didn’t do much for her complexion.  we hate to admit this, but it probably added five years to her age.  once we put the right shade on her and applied one step correct as a primer there was a noticeable change.  she looked younger and healthier.  keep this in mind.  and if you need help choosing the right foundation, ask.  you will be glad you did.

don’t forget the color.  sometimes women assume that color means bold or red.  this isn’t true.  color could be a nice neutral that pops your cheeks and lips like stila’s yumberry crush.  it is amazing how a product like this will add a youthful glow and brighten up anyone’s eyes.  sadly sometimes doing nothing can do the exact opposite, so don't be afraid of color.

be strategic about where you shimmer.  we love shimmer as much as the next person.  however, shimmer all over the face doesn’t look very good on too many people (especially as you get older).  and on a lot of people, it tends to be counterproductive - instead of highlighting the face, it ages the face.  to avoid this blunder, don’t skip the shimmer altogether.  instead, use it selectively.  apply it to the features that need highlighting.  a good place to start is on the lids of your eyes and on your cheekbones!

the color wheel look in gold

Nov 12, 2010

how much do you love stila’s holiday color wheel?  this palette offers you every color in the rainbow (and more!) allowing you to recreate limitless looks.  the gold look that was created using this color wheel palette is elegant and a definite show stopper.  stila’s pro artist, kaci harabedian, created this look.  she commented that, “gold is a versatile eye shadow color to wear during the day or night.”  kaci also told us how much she loved adding drama to the eye look by applying one of her favorite products on the lips – fiery long wear liquid lip color.  and, although this is an amazing look and a perfect party look, you could easily take it down a notch by applying a neutral gloss on the lips instead.  kaci actually recommended mocha lip glaze.

to awaken the artist in you, check out our inspiration for this look below!  We hope it inspires you as you “paint” your eyes up everyday.
